Overview of Albert Head Lagoon

Albert Head Lagoon

Vancouver Island, BC

Albert Head Lagoon is another wonderful no-current dive for searching out crabs and skates. This site is really off the beaten path, so bring everything you need for a comfortable day.

Directions: From Victoria Harbor, take the Trans-Canada Highway (1) to the North. In 9km go South on Highway 14 (Old Island Highway). In 4.5km turn left on Metchosin Road and travel for 3.6km until you reach Albert Head Lagoon Regional Park.

12/19/2014 Paul Kroeker (Avg: 3.13 Review) - I came out here to check out my leaking dry suit after a repair. The parking was good and I got geared up in short order. Because of the houses around and lack of changing area, I wore Adidas shorts to avoid giving the local home owners a show. The shoreline was good soft coarse sand with many large logs on it, but it was easy enough to get to the water 50 feet away. I swam out along the bottom which was sandy and slowly the depth increased. At 12 to 15 feet the sand changed to silt and the crabs appeared along with thousands of empty clam shells. Some of the dungenous crabs were fairly large. The highlight of the dive was a visit by a large Harbour Seal who got within 10 feet of me to check me out. It was white with gray spots. So cool...

06/07/2012 Louise Vachon (Avg: 3.12 Review) - Easy dive site, always good parking but the gate closes at 8pm. Walk around a few logs and down the beach, which is soft sinking pebbles wearing all your gear! Sandy bottom with lots of bottom fish and crabs to entertain on your swim out to the little island, which you can easily see from the beach, lots of life at the island, you can swim right around it with enough air to get back. In the spring the kelp growing around the island is thick so you have to peak underneath and wow there's lots under there, probably a better dive in the winter when the kelp dies down. The back side of the island has quite a large bull kelp forest to navigate. The highlight of this dive was an inquisitive harbour seal who played with us for some time. This site also had good visibility which at this time of year can be hard to find.

06/01/2006 Reed Early (Avg: 2.96 Review) - Great first dive. Really easy parking and entry to the water, with no current. The dive is shallow (< 30') to the rock islands on the right. Some interesting life and dive features. Avoid the kelp beds behind the rocks.

04/23/2004 Anonymous (Avg: 3.72 Review) - Good Dive, abundant Marine life ( Octopus, anemone urchins) with a bottom depth from 20 to 60 feet. Easy shore entry, little current, fair visibility make this an excellent beginner dive or for one who just wants a relaxing dive with a fair bit or marine life

04/09/2003 Geoff (Avg: 3.07 Review) - This is a good site. Lots of debris due to heavy food collecting but as you get further out there are several octopus, fish and other such marine life.
