Submitter Comments:
Across the road from the parking area is a trail leading into the dive site. About mid-way the trail branches; to the left lies 5 caves, to the right lies turtle town. Follow the right trail into the narrow bay, and crawl down the rocks on the north (right) side of the bay into the water. This is actually easier at low tide as a series of stone "steps" becomes exposed, thus easing entry. From the bay you want to swim straight out to sea, following the rock point to your left. The dive itself consists of a series of interlinking reefs. The life among these reefs is the same as you would see at 5 caves, although not as densely packed. The dive site is well named, as you are bound to see several turtles every dive (we saw a dozen in a 40 minute dive). This is also a popular site for dive boats to drop off snorkelers, so there can be a lot of traffic on the surface. The dive itself is 20' to 35' deep. Visibility is good once you clear the entry point - the water upon entry is very turbid due to a fresh-water stream which flows into the bay. For an easier exit you can swim around the rock point to the 5-caves entry, although if there are waves the turtle point entry is safer and more protected.

Directions:
This site is located immediately next to 5 caves, and shares the same parking area/access trails. At the South End of Highway 31 bear right onto Wailea Iki. Continue to the T, turn left on Wailea Alanui. After 2.2 miles, turn right onto Makena Road. In a couple of hundred yards, you'll see the parking area.

06/13/2011 ReefDiver (Avg: 2.74 Review) - Lots of nice calm turtles that will let you pet them. For beginners, I would suggest entering at the sandy cove not at the rocks. It's a long swim but much easier entry.

03/21/2009 D & C Daughenbaugh (Avg: 3.65 Review) - We REALLY enjoyed this dive! The entry is not nearly as difficult as we thought it might be. The most challenging part was FINDING the correct location. There are TWO different Makena Road entrances off of Wailea Alanui ... take the SECOND Makena Road. While on the dive, we saw 4-5 turtles that were very friendly & curious ... the last one we saw as we were swimming back into the narrow entry point. It was coming out of the cove. We also saw some beautiful fish and coral. This was a relatively easy and very rewarding dive. We recommend it!

10/30/2007 Bill Stohler (Avg: 2.69 Review) - Turtle Town is so named for a turtle cleaning station located in just 20 feet of water. Due to great numbers of tourist snorkel boats, many of the honu have departed the now-famous reef for less crowded waters. This area is located just to the south of the finger / ridge that is located on the South side of the 5 Graves entry. It is easily accessible from the 5 Graves entry (a 5-minute swim around the point). This site is a small component of the normal dive from 5 Graves to Makena Landing. However, we have seen schools of Heller's Barracuda here, as well as manta rays during siltier conditions in the winter time. One lucky dive boat anchored just offshore in 50 feet was fortunate several winters ago to witness a very low-draft humpback whale!

08/16/2004 Bryan Heit (Avg: 3.06 Review) - An interesting site - not as good as its next-door neighbor 5 caves, but worth checking out. Not a dive to do if there is surf - entry would be nearly impossible with even moderate waves. Major downside to this dive is that a lot of snorkel boats drop people off here, so the surface can be rather crowded. True to its name this place is loaded with turtles. We saw ~20 in a 40-minute dive!
