Overview of Koke'e Park

Home

Koke'e Park is a great public access to a magnificent shelf. This is sometimes used as an exit point from the next dive site, Koko Kai Park.

Directions: Take Kalanianaole Highway (72) East toward Koko Head. Before heading up the side of Koko Head, turn right on Nawiliwili Street. After .3 miles turn left onto Poipu Drive. Bear right. After .6 miles turn right onto Hanapepe Loop. Take your first right into the public access.

09/02/2009 Barry W. Stieglitz (Avg: 1.81 Review) - August 29, 2009. One can either turn onto Lunalilo Home Road (crosses the Kalaniana'ole Highway at the Hawaii Kai Foodland) OR Nawiliwili Street: both roads intersect Poipu Drive and the posted directions work from there. Entry was easy, and humping gear down from the street wasn't much worse, in my opinion, than, say, Sharks Cove, although it is steeper. We had 1-2' swells and a trade wind that had the bottom all stirred up. Viz may have been 15-20'. Straight out from shore the bottom averaged 12' with little topography. Neither we nor our snorkeler escort saw any marine life of note, although viz improved to maybe 30' once we were out a couple hundred yards. Saw a single moray and lots of tobys, but that's about it. We amused ourselves by collecting (not kidding here) an entire small mesh bag of golf balls! This may not have been a typical viz day, and next time we will head left along the wall (and maybe find the guy using his back lanai as a golfing range?).

05/18/2004 Janet Shuldt (Avg: 2.77 Review) - This was a very difficult dive for me. Too much gear to carry over too many rocks. I must admit that it was very exciting, but at least I can say I did it! Just make sure you check the current before you jump in.

12/14/2002 Anonymous (Avg: 2.76 Review) - Not much to see; also the street the directions tell you to turn on was not marked when we were there - but it was the first right after mile marker 13 (going east).

04/15/2002 Deven Phillips (Avg: 3.69 Review) - Upon reaching the signs for Koke'e park, you must climb down to the entry point with your gear. You are not allowed to park your car beside the park due to limited space. So, pull up to the park, unload your gear and leave your buddy to watch equipment whilst you find parking. Put on your gear before climbing down (or make several trips). The entry and exits are fairly simple with limited surface swim required. Swim against the current toward Hanauma Bay and you can enjoy the wall and the reef below.

It's best to remain close to the shelf, as most sea life accumulates there.
