Submitter Comments:
Vet's Park is one of the easiest shore dives in California. There is plentiful parking (bring lots of quarters), restrooms, bottled water vending machines and fresh water showers to rinse off after the dive. Redondo Canyon begins very close to shore here, so access to deep water is only minutes away. Most divers swim straight out from the stairs adjacent to the restrooms until you are parallel to the end of the pier. Dropping down here will put you within just a few kicks of the drop-off. Depths range from 0-40 feet in the shallows to well beyond recreational diving depths in the canyon. During Winter, squid runs bring in mating squid and nearly every animal in the food chain follows them. It is not uncommon to see thousands of mating squid during a big run. Bat rays, blue sharks, sea lions and large Sheep crabs can also be seen here. South of the canyon is the Topaz Street jetty. This can be a productive lobster spot on occasion. The conditions at Vet's are usually better than sites just a few hundred yards south. Flat surf is the norm here, so entry and exit is fairly easy.

Directions:
Located at the intersection of Pearl Street and Esplanade, the parking lot at Veteran's Park has plentiful metered spaces. Stairs to the beach are located at the Southwest end of the lot.

06/05/2011 Jason NYC (Avg: 2.27 Review) - Not much to see here most of the time beyond the typical sand critters unless you're out at night then all the life comes out of hiding. Easy entry and exit unless surf is up. The sand is soft so watch your footing. Decent walk up and down the stairs to the entry but it could be worse. Bring lots of change for the meters as they are patrolled heavily. Easy dive in the sand zone. Out west and in east. Viz zero to 20 ft. Depends. If you get lucky you can see sea lions and bat rays. We saw a pod of dolphins on the surface before the dive today. Gets deep fast. Usually very busy with divers on weekends. Great facilities and two dive shops close by for air fills and stuff. Recently moved to LA from NYC so good to have lots of new shore diving options!

07/29/2008 Brian Xavier (Avg: 3.54 Review) - I really liked diving Redondo Canyon. After kicking out to the end of the pier (35 feet) the bottom sloped to great depths. Dropped to 80 feet quickly. The vis in the canyon was a good 20 feet. Saw some nice starfish and small flatfish. Very simple dive- East out and West in. Topaz Jetty is to the south and looks like another good dive. The slope of the canyon reminded me of the blue slide at Honaunau on the Big Island- drops off forever. Nice place to get deep fast!

07/03/2006 Kendall Roberg (Avg: 2.95 Review) - Fun site and the quickest surface swim to depth I have every done. Drop down just past where the waves break, the canyon starts very close to shore. Great dive for beginners.

08/29/2005 Jeff P (Avg: 2.90 Review) - Great dive, 20' Vis - easy getting in and out!
