Overview of Whales Head

Whales Head

USA West

Whales Head is a very nice destination for a day's diving. Kelp beds on the North side of bay provide the most interesting sights. Start at low tide and kick out about 100 yards.

Directions: Located about 7 miles North of Brookings, look for the small sign at the entrance on the ocean-side of the road.

02/28/2006 Steve Denney (Avg: 3.92 Review) - A couple hundred yard trek to the water brings you to a sandy, easy slope west. First rock has interesting bottom life but the action is beyond the channel between the two large islands. Ling Cod and Octopus live along the south side of the outside island. Pick a calm day.

Parking at Whales Head

Lots of parking, with picnic tables nearby. You can tell that you'll have somewhat of a hike to get to the water's edge.

It's an easy, yet long walk from the parking lot. You might have to get your feet wet crossing a small creek that runs through the beach.

Entry at Whales Head

Pick your entry. If the surf is amenable, kick out between the cliff and the rock. Otherwise, move further down the beach.
