Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Hoop Pole Cove

Hoop Pole Cove is known for its great lobstering. With depths no more than 40 feet, you'll find lots of nooks and crannies in the rocky bottom, a favorite habitat of our favorite crustation. At the intersection of SR 127 and SR127A in Rockport (NE Cape Ann), continue North for 1.4 miles, turn right onto Phillips Ave, and continue further for another .43 miles.

Making it to the water's edge requires some skill and boulder-crossing experience. Go with a guide the first time if you are unsure of your ability to enter and exit a rocky environment. We'd consider this an advanced dive. And a view to the right. A view of the coastline to the left. When you get to edge of the pavement, continue down the dirt path just ahead. This walk way is easy to miss, so keep your eyes open. You'll have a 150 yard hike down to the water.

Great site for diving, so we have been here several times. It's hit or miss with the current and the wave height which can make for a difficult entry & exit. The current tends to read differently below the surface. Good place for small lobsters; I have never seen any over 3lbs here. Local fishermen on shore and on the boats have never given us a problem. Lots of lobster traps to navigate around. Locals are very friendly, and a new Dunkin Doughnuts was just built right up the street!

Dove here once last year a found it to be a nice site as a novice diver. Dove here again yesterday and had a great day. Weather was mostly clear and warm. Entry wasn't the easiest, but was worth it. Visibility was far better than expected (30-40'). Lots of small (but legal size) lobster and a few large size lobster. Overall was an excellent experience. If you're looking for easy entry and exit, try another spot.

A nice spot, but bring someone who knows the area. If your compass skills are off, you can head into open, dangerous water. Also please, please do not park at the actual site. The residents don't like it and buddies of mine have been towed (deservedly).

Good dive site... challenging entry/exit. Go at high tide.
